Coastal Resilience

CMA Engineers Building Resilient Infrastructure for a Changing Coast

Coastal communities across New England are increasingly challenged by sea level rise, storm surge, tidal flooding, and aging infrastructure located in vulnerable coastal environments. CMA Engineers works with municipalities, regional agencies, and conservation organizations to help assess risk, plan for changing conditions, and design resilient infrastructure solutions that can be implemented and maintained over time.

Our coastal resiliency work integrates planning, engineering, environmental permitting, and constructability to address both near-term vulnerabilities and long-term adaptation needs. Projects often involve complex interactions between coastal processes, transportation systems, utilities, stormwater infrastructure, and sensitive natural resources. CMA Engineers brings practical coastal engineering experience to help communities move from vulnerability assessment to actionable, fundable projects.

Coastal Resiliency Services

CMA Engineers provides coastal resiliency services that include:

  • Vulnerability assessments related to sea level rise, storm surge, and tidal flooding
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of coastal and tidally influenced systems
  • Planning and design of resilient transportation, drainage, and utility infrastructure
  • Design of tidal crossings, culverts, bridges, seawalls, revetments, and shoreline stabilization measures
  • Nature-based and hybrid solutions, including salt marsh restoration and living shorelines
  • Regulatory coordination and permitting with local, state, and federal agencies
  • Community and stakeholder engagement to support consensus-driven solutions

From Planning to Implementation

A defining element of CMA Engineers’ coastal resiliency work is a focus on implementable solutions. Many projects combine technical analysis with early coordination among municipalities, regulators, and stakeholders to streamline permitting and support phased implementation. Designs emphasize constructability in challenging marine and tidal environments, while balancing infrastructure protection with ecological connectivity and long-term sustainability.

CMA Engineers’ experience spans a wide range of coastal settings, including tidal rivers, salt marshes, barrier beaches, working waterfronts, and historic coastal communities. This breadth of experience allows us to tailor solutions to local conditions while applying consistent, defensible engineering approaches.
