CMA Engineers’ Whitney Chamberlain, P.E. is back on campus again! Whitney, an alumnus of UNH’s Civil Engineering graduate program in 2015, serves as the Resident Project Representative at her alma mater for construction of the Main Street South Sidewalk Project. This project fills a critical gap in the University of New Hampshire’s sidewalk network on the south side of Main Street between the roundabout and the Fieldhouse main entrance, provides additional pedestrian capacity for Wildcat Stadium events, and further enhances the gateway feel when entering campus. Working closely with UNH, CMA Engineers successfully navigated the NHDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) to fund the construction of this project, which involves constructing concrete sidewalks, drainage, retaining walls, a bus pull off with shelter, pedestrian scale lighting, shade trees and fencing.
A unique element of this project is that it identified the location of a 19th century unmarked grave, which is located just outside the project limits. Extensive archeological research was undertaken as part of the design process that identified a grave, which is presumed to be the grave of Nancy Page. Her gravestone was located approximately 60 feet away from the actual grave location. The project included carefully excavating the gravestone, placing it adjacent to the actual grave, and creating a memorial to protect the 100+ year old gravestone. The project was completed in November 2020.
